The white rhinos are also known as the square-lipped rhino because of their square upper lip. They were originally referred to as Wyd rhinos, an Afrikaans word that referred to the size of their mouth which was very wide.

The Sumatran rhino lives in dense tropical forests, both lowland and highland, mainly on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. This species is a browser and an opportunistic feeder. These tropical forest dwellers are generally solitary.

The Javan Rhino is more browser and table feeder than other rhino species: in the tropical rainforest where the species now survives, it is a pure browser, but it possibly was a mixed feeder (both browse and grass) in other parts of its historic range.

The Indian or Nepal rhino is also known as a greater one-horned rhino, a threatened species of rhino that wallows in water and can be places where several individuals meet, as a kind of social gathering.

The Black rhinos are the smaller of the two African rhino species; they are also known as the hook-lipped rhino. This is because they possess a hooked upper lip rather than the square upper lip that identifies the white rhino.
